Vitens is opening a unique location for drinking water research at Noardburgum drinking waterproduction facility on Monday 3 October. The demo site is where the drinking water company will be developing and testing new purification techniques for drinking water production and offering other companies the opportunity to experiment with drinking water innovations.

Singapore, July 6th 2011 - Vitens is planning to provide its Dutch water mains network with fast sensor technology aimed at detecting pollution sooner. Additionally, ‘smart grids’ result in more sustainable water consumption. In future, Vitens' customers will not only be able to see whether the water that comes out of their taps is safe, but also its composition and the consumption per household.

Utrecht, February 1st 2011 - On February 1st, drinking water company Vitens was awarded the Barometer Duurzaam Terreinbeheer (‘Sustainable Terrain Management Barometre’) certificate. Vitens’ approach to the management of its water collection areas was rewarded with a gold certification – the highest level attainable.

Utrecht, January 13th 2011 - On January 14th 2011, Professor Walter van der Meer, member of the Executive Board of drinking water company Vitens, will be appointed part-time professor at Delft University of Technology. For Van der Meer, this switch is in line with the ambition to let Vitens operate at the top level in the area of water technology.

Utrecht/Doorn, 22 December 2010. On 1 January 2011, the acquisition of the last privately-owned drinking water company in the Netherlands will be a fact. From 1 January 2011 on, over 4,000 households in Doorn and part of Leersum will be Vitens customers. These households will be receiving a welcome pack this week from Vitens’ technicians. For the residents of Doorn and Leersum, the acquisition means that they will be paying less for their drinking water, with savings for an average household estimated at some EUR 100 per year.

Vitens will be fixing the rates for drinking water until the end of 2013. The price will remain 0.0013 euro per litre of drinking water. There will be no correction for inflation. The dividend policy for the shareholders – Provinces and Municipalities – will be adapted in anticipation of the new Drinking Water Act. This was decided at the Vitens shareholders’ meeting on 15 December 2010.

Singapore/Utrecht, 1 July 2010 - The introduction of real-time monitoring systems to detect the full spectrum of possible contaminants in drinking water made a leap forward today. During the Singapore International Water Week Vitens (the largest drinking water supplier of the Netherlands) and Singapore based Optiqua announced a ground breaking deal to join forces in developing sensor technology with this aim.

Utrecht, 22 March 2010 – Newly installed water pipes in homes can release small amounts of undesirable substances. Vitens advises owners of new homes especially to flush the pipes in their home for the first three months after completion. Two minutes a day is sufficient. Starting this week, Vitens is including a sticker on the water meter or meter cupboard in new homes to alert the owner of this recommendation.

Leeuwarden/Utrecht, 1 March 2010 – The investigation into the salinisation (increasing salt) in the surface and ground water in north-west Friesland will continue in March and April. Soil testing – so-called conductivity tests – will be performed with a truck from Wiertsema & Partners. This soil sampling will be performed in March and April along public roads and properties, which may result in some traffic disruptions. The Province of Friesland, the Friesland Water Authority, Deltares and Vitens are sponsoring the investigation.

Utrecht, 29 January 2010 - Vitens and Oasen are stepping up their partnership. The two drinking water companies have agreed to exchange knowledge relating to water technology for three years. The new agreements are a continuation of an agreement from 2009, in which the two companies agreed that Vitens would perform the water analyses for Oases in the coming three years.

Utrecht/Rotterdam, 28 January 2010. The team of five specialists sent by the two largest drinking water companies in the Netherlands returned from Haiti. They had spent a week there at the request of local Haitian authorities to provide support in provisionally restoring drinking water services to the capital of Port-au-Prince after the country was hit by a severe earthquake.

Utrecht/Rotterdam, 18 January 2010. The Netherlands’ two largest drinking-water companies, Vitens and Evides, will be providing assistance in Haiti. On Tuesday 9 January, a team of five experts will leave for the earthquake-battered country tomorrow morning to offer support in restoring the drinking-water supply in the capital of Port-au-Prince. The mission is the initiative of Vitens-Evides International, a partnership between the two water companies. The organisation has experience in supporting drinking-water companies in various developing countries.

These appointments mean the Executive Board is once again up to full strength.

Utrecht, 7 September 2009 - For the coming three months the three water boards and drinking water companies Oasen and Vitens are working together with STOWA (the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research) on an extensive study of medicines in wastewater and surface water in the province of Utrecht. The study is to be completed next spring.
